Why is the stability of supplements so important?
The food supplement must be safe and effective throughout its lifetime - not only on the day of production.
To guarantee this, the manufacturer must know that:
- ingredients will not disintegrate too fast,
- the product will retain normal activity,
- will not change odour, consistency and colour,
- microbiology will remain normal throughout the storage period.
This is what they assess stability tests.
What are the stability tests of the supplements?
Stability tests are tests that simulate the actual storage conditions of the product for many months or years.
Samples of the supplement are placed in special climate chambers, where they are controlled:
| Parameter | Example value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 25°C or 40°C |
| Moisture | 60-75% RH |
| Light access | none/simulated exposure |
At selected intervals (e.g. 1, 3, 6, 12 months), among other things, it checks:
- content of active ingredients (e.g. vitamins, probiotics, adaptogens),
- microbiological purity,
- appearance and taste,
- pH (for liquids),
- tightness of packaging.
Types of stability tests
1. accelerated tests
Elevated temperature and humidity tests that allow quickly predicthow the supplement will behave over time.
✅ Result: determination estimated durability.
2. long-term tests
Carried out under conditions similar to real product storage.
✅ Result: confirmation expiry dates and storage conditions ('store in a cool, dry place').
Which products require particular scrutiny?
Not all supplements age the same.
The most vulnerable are:
| Product type | Why? |
|---|---|
| Probiotics | Bacteria may lose viability over time |
| Collagen and proteins | Sensitive to moisture and oxidation |
| Liquids and syrups | pH and maintenance stability |
| Plant extracts | Can react to light and temperature |
Therefore, the right form, capsule, sachet, amber bottle or blister have paramount importance.
